What’s
an OnoPop?
Says
right there on the label: “Fresh Local Gourmet Hawaiian Paleta.” We had
you until that last word, right?
Paleta means popsicle in Mexican Spanish, and represents a long history of
gourmet, natural frozen
confection innovation. The tradition that began
in 1946 in
Tocumbo,
Mexico has led to an impressive
culinary precedent
that demands fresh local ingredients, handmade techniques,
and puts a premium on creativity and cleverness in designing
flavor
combinations.
Despite
this ambition and high-bar for quality, the product itself remains instantly
familiar and comforting
from childhood – the humble Popsicle, created by accident, as the hoary story
goes, when young Frank Epperson
left bicarbonate of soda, grape syrup and water
out on the porch during a freak overnight freeze in San Francisco in 1911,
thirteen
long years before the young chemistry graduate would patent his
“quiescent freezing” process in 1924. He called them Eps’ Sicles
, a name
his kids hated so much they started calling them Pops’ sicles…and the name
stuck.
While
Americans and Mexicans were making delicious frozen treats, people in
Hawaii were creating a
unique culinary tradition of their
own. OnoPops is the mixing of these
two stories, as if island locals had been making
delicious popsicles
since plantation days, instead of what history tells us – which is that they decided to
pour syrup on scraped snow in paper
cups instead. Hey, shave ice is ono
since ono was ono, don’t get us wrong. But
we think you might like to try something new.
You like
a certain drink that mixes lilikoi, orange and guava? We got that. You like Kona coffee made into a
rich and delicious
creamy latte? We got that. We know that if you make banana
cream pie, you gotta make it with ripe, local apple bananas.
We know your
kids are going to love the sweet-salty tang of our Pineapple-Li Hing Mui. And OnoPops aren’t just for kids.
We know that if you have our
Ume-Thai Basil OnoPop in one hand and a cold, imported Japanese lager in the
other, you will have a
smile on your face. Delicious
by nature, green by design. Check out OnoPops. Why?
They’re ono, that’s why.
